MULL 2006
It was October 2006 and yes it was !! MULL TIME !! once again the crazy species known as "RALLY ENTHUSIASTS " made there annual pilgramage to the ilse of Mull. As usuall there was the talk of who would win apparently this a close contest between all 150 competitors as when you talked to any of them they were all the fastest drivers up there.
From our point of view (C.D.M.C.) we had our own vested interest in the event and our own questions had to be answered !!!
Would the father and son team Barritt get more than 500 yards before they start ripping chunks off each other?
Would any of the Mini`s would see the finish ramp?
Is 1400cc enough to pull Chris And Heidi "WOODCOCK" around the island ?
Has Dave Calvert got rid of that "TICKING" on his engine ?
AND IS THERE ENOUGH BEER ON THE ISLAND FOR ALAN & BRUCE ??????
And the answers to the above are YES , YES , YES , YES & JUST !!!
This was my third visit to the Island and now i can say it does have that "THING".Walking up and down Tobermory front and more people recognising you than back home in town thats the MULL THING , at 3:30am in the pitch black someone recognises your voice and says hello thats the MULL THING. I spoke to people who have been year after year and all you are told is " it just has that thing " well you are right it does....
Back to the event and our club entries :-
Our top seed car 12 was Daniel Harper & Chris Campbell in thier BMW Mini. Well he lost a wheel , went off , lost his water , boiled up and jesus wept he finished!!! well done !!
Next car 26 John Cressey & Stan Quirk in thier BMW Mini, it got hot , it got very hot then it holed a piston.
Next car 54 was Mr Chris and Mrs Heidi Woodcock in 1400cc Proton ( yes i know 1400 Chris & Heidi poor car) , What can i say an easy weekend or what !!!! i didn`t have to do much at all all he broke was the power steering pump. He even did the whole event on the same 4 tyres. OK I will eat humble pie 1400cc and they go and win there class properly 28th o/a 1st i/c well done !! (and that humble pie was lovely )
Next Car 59 Gary & Ian Dawes in thier new BMW mini , they broke a shaft within 200yds of stage 1 , then lost the supercharger belt causing them to retire , but on a more positive note they LOVED the new car !!!!
Next car 87 David Barritt & Daniel Barritt in the Chevette WRC. The car was mint the box and diff were new and away they went setting a good pace over the weekend only problem i was made aware of was a damaged brake pipe causing no brakes at all for 2 stages "nowt really" finished 45th o/a well done !!
Car 95 next Dave Calvert & Colin Maceller in the Escort Mk2 . Dave unfortunately grounded out the car on Friday night and was unable to get it back onto the tarmac. He did however taker part in the trophy rally on Sunday finishing 14th trophy and 90th o/a well done !!
Finally "I think" was car 131 Stephen Taylor & Charlie Chatburn in the Mistubishi Evolution 8. As far as i now a fairly trouble free run on his first visit to the island, just said he was " absolutely knackered" as i saw him at the end of the final stage. Steve finished 37th o/a ( a fantastic improvement on seeding ) well done !!
